Happy Valentines Day
Go to fullsize imageIt’s good to express appreciation and love to those around you. I had the opportunity to attend Robert and Linda Grimauds’ farewell last month. Robert served for 29 years on staff at Montebello Christian Fellowship, 23 of those years as the Senior Pastor. The church was full and the farewell was serious, sensitive, silly and special, as farewells should be. Well done, Montebello. Sunrise Church in Rialto honored Pastor Jay Pankratz for his 20 years of ministry in January as well, and are looking forward to even more exciting things to happen in the years to come.

The apostle Paul wrote about some special people he appreciated, “for they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.” 1 Cor.16: 18. With recognition in mind, it’s good to show appreciation not only once every 20 or 30 years, but on a regular basis. Valentine’s Day gives us that opportunity. Sure, it might be a day that the greeting card companies created, but use it as an opportunity to say, “I love you,” to that special partner in ministry, your spouse. It doesn’t have to be on that day, perhaps earlier if you are busy, but do something. Here are some ideas: Dinner out, flowers, card, a gift, trip to the beach, shopping together, a movie, dinner and rent a movie, picnic inside or outside, visit the park, observatory, amusement park, theatre tickets, drive to the mountains, another gift, candy, all of the above, or something not included above. Whatever you do, do something.

Love your wife, honor your husband. Don’t Forget.

Happy Valentines Day!

Large Church Roundtable
On Monday, February 2, CBSC hosted a luncheon at the Evangelical Christian Credit Union’s (ECCU) beautiful Gilead Retreat Center for Lead and Executive Pastors on topics that relate directly to churches over 1,000. The agenda was set by the participants, and after 3 ½ hours of healthy discussion, our time was up. Pacific Coast Church, San Clemente; Grace Church, Glendora; Sunrise Church, Rialto; Bethany Church, Long Beach; Whittier Hills Baptist, Whittier; High Desert Church, Victorville; and New Song Community Church, Oceanside; along with CB Southern California were represented. Because of the positive response, we will plan on another session in the fall.

Ordained for Ministry
Israel Gomez (left), Youth Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Whittier, is congratulated by his Senior Pastor, John Ploog, for satisfactorily answering the questions presented by their ordination council and being unanimously recommended for ordination. Calvary assembled their ordination council of 10 men and many observers on January 20, where Israel answered questions for 2 hours. It all began last fall when Israel started working on his ordination paper with Dr. Tony Pezzotta , chairman of the CB Southern California Ordination Committee. After a satisfactory completion of his paper, Israel sat down with the CBSC pre-ordination committee to prepare for the church’s ordination council. Ordination is a function of the local church, and after the CBSC pre-ordination committee recommended that he was ready, the church assembled their Ordination Council. His ordination service is on Sunday, February 8 at Calvary. Congratulations Israel!

Great News from the IRS
Our national office sent this notice from the IRS for us to pass on to you. I don’t completely understand this, but our CPA says it is good news. 403(b) Compliance Extension. Back in 2007, the IRS made some changes regarding the 403(b) retirement plans. As 2008 came to an end, many nonprofit organizations reportedly were still not in compliance with the new federal regulations governing section 403(b) retirement plans. The IRS has given a welcome reprieve. In December 2008, the IRS issued a notice extending the current December 31, 2008 deadline for employers with section 403(b) plans to adopt new or amended written plans to satisfy these regulations. The IRS further announced that it will not invalidate any section 403(b) plans in 2009 so long as the following measures are taken by the end of 2009: (1) the employer, as plan sponsor, adopts a written section 403(b) plan that is intended to satisfy the requirements of section 403(b); (2) the employer operates the plan in accordance with a reasonable interpretation of section 403(b) during 2009; and (3) the employer makes its best efforts to retroactively correct any operational failure to comply with section 403(b) requirements. The IRS is expected to issue additional guidance in 2009 addressing section 403(b) requirements. You may contact those overseeing your retirement plans and pass this information to them. They will understand it.

CB Chaplaincy

Good Year for CB Chaplaincy
I had the chance to visit with Al Russell, our CB Chaplaincy Director at our January CBAmerica Board Meetings. Lots of exciting things are happening in our chaplaincy program. Here is a glance at his report:

There are over 247 chaplains representing CBAmerica around the world. Keep them in your prayers. Our chaplains serve in a variety of ministries such as the military, Civil Air Patrol, civilian hospitals, industrial settings, nursing homes, law enforcement, fire departments, state prisons, music and arts industry, professional sports teams, bus companies, retirement centers, campus ministry, etc. In the military alone, CBAmerica is presently represented by 40 active duty chaplains; 3 Air Force, 7 Navy, and 30 Army. They are stationed all around the USA. We have 36 chaplains representing CBAmerica in the National Guard/Reserve of the military. There are 8 chaplains serving in Veterans Medical Centers, 10 prison chaplains, and 6 women chaplains. There are 25 chaplain candidates. These candidates go into chaplaincy after they finish school and complete the pastoral experience that is required. This year we endorsed 27 new chaplains and 11 candidates. Some are still waiting to hear from military accessions boards. Our chaplains have had the opportunity to lead hundreds of people to Christ this year with many others rededicating their lives and being baptized. Bible studies are full and our servicemen are seeking the Lord’s guidance in their lives. Nursing home chaplains and hospital chaplains are seeing a real interest in spiritual things and our prison chaplains are saying they are seeing revival in the prisons. Hospice ministry is seeing dying patients come to Christ. We are making a difference. chapruss@earthlink.net

Deaths

Another Warrior Called to Heaven
On Saturday, January 10th, a Memorial Service was held at the Mt. Miguel Retirement Village, in the greater San Diego area, for Harold Salseth who had reached the age of 88. The Salseths, Harold and Joan, were long-time CBFMS/CBI/WorldVenture missionaries to the Congo area. They spent 37 years living and working in Africa, church planting, teaching at the Central Bible Institute at Rwangube and other ministries, often during turbulent times. Harold also spent time helping the African people in rebuilding structures, and as a result of working in asbestos frequently and living near a spewing volcano, contacted life ending emphysema. His home church was in Oceanside, but they returned often to Africa until he moved to the Retirement Village in 2003.

Churches

Reaching Many in Bishop
Pastor Rick Klug loves the outdoors, football, and preaching. Not sure if he likes this particular picture, but he is a good sport. His CB church in Bishop, Calvary Baptist Church, is experiencing some exciting growth in recent months. With an attendance of over 300, they are now the largest church in the town of Bishop, population 3,457. They are a community church family – a group of people who are striving to be characterized by grace and who are bringing a message of hope to people in their valley and throughout the world. One of their successful outreaches last year was going through the book, One Month to Live. They have started a Celebrate Recovery Program for their community, and this month they begin a youth version recovery outreach called “Life Hurts, God Heals. Along with some church plant dreams in surrounding communities and a continued external focus on reaching their community for Christ, they keep striving to honor the Lord in all they do. Well done. Bishop.

Changing Name, But Not Purpose
Elders Fernando, Ernie, Jesse and Andy are faithfully carrying on their duties in Riverside. Formally known as the “Church with No Walls,” they have officially changed their name to “By His Grace Ministries.” These men have seen many unexpected hurdles in their church plant over the past 10 or so years, yet they remain strong and faithful with about 45-60 in attendance. Jesse is doing most of the preaching, but each Elder has taken some teaching responsibility throughout the year. Jesse also meets monthly with Pastor Dave Stanley, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Riverside, where By His Grace Ministries has their offices.

Board Training in San Antonio Heights
Ed Reingrover, CBSC’s Director of Administration, is pictured with the Elders of San Antonio Heights Community Church during a one-day seminar to help better equip their Elders in their leadership role. SAHCC recently changed their constitution and leadership structure with the help of CBSC. Jim Smith and Ed travel to requesting CB churches to provide on-site training in the various aspects of church leadership. If your church is interested in receiving this training, call our CB office to set up your one-day session: 909.944.5900.

Church Plant in San Juan Capistrano
Founded by Pastor Derek Greenhalgh and Youth Pastor Steve Bolin, Creekside Bible Chapel launched their first service in the Spring of 2007. With two years of ministry and experience, they have asked to be affiliated with CB Southern California. Prior to his graduation from Moody Bible Institute, Derek served on staff at Pacific Coast Church and is familiar with CB Southern California. Our board has approved their request, and they will be formally voted into our association at our annual meeting in March. Check out their webpage at www.creeksidebiblechapel.org.

Baptism and the Internet
A woman named Tracy was recently baptized in the ocean off the island of Guam by Pastors Mike Albin and Greg Atkinson. By God’s grace, Tracy has overcome a period of unemployment, homelessness and overwhelming debt . In her written testimony she shared that it was through the internet that she found Bayview Baptist. “Why your church? This is where I was led in my internet research of churches in Guam. Not only do we share the same home church name, but our mission, vision, and mottos are nearly identical. Doctrinally, it aligns with what I have been taught, believe, and live by through the Word of God.” Tracy’s story is good reminder to keep web sites updated and attractive.
